While serving as editor-in-chief of The Lance, the newspaper hosted the spring Ontario regional conference for Canadian University Press co-operative. Referred to as ORCUP, Behind the (Head)lines brought journalists from across the province to Windsor, Ont. from March 29-31, 2013.

The conference theme, Between the (Head)lines, looked at the media misrepresentation of Windsor and Detroit as a launch point to exploring the stories behind the obvious and sensational, and how to use journalism to unearth the real stories in our communities.

The conference included regional speakers, newsroom tours and social events. Speakers included Shawn Micallef (senior editor of Spacing magazine, author and Toronto Star columnist), Steve Dorsey (VP research & development Detroit Media Partnership), Marty Gervais (journalist, professor and Windsor’s poet laureate), Sonya Bell (iPolitics, Canadian Press), Veronique Mandal (St. Clair College), Blake Roberts (University of Windsor) and Katherine Lapointe (CWA Canada).
